Remember
Dogs must be held by a leash in all public places, unless in an approved Dog Exercise Area.
If your dog rushes at or chases someone, you can be fined and your dog declared a dangerous dog, in accordance with the Dog Act 1976.
If your dog attacks a person or animal, penalties can include:
- Infringements
- Declaring your dog a dangerous dog.
- Court action
- Restitution - damages to be paid (court action)
- Destruction of your dog through the courts (court action)
A dog of any size or breed can become aggressive when defending its territory.
Most dog attacks occur in a public place, whilst the offending dog has been reported off-lead, or on the footpath or road bordering the attacking dog's property.
It is important to know how to approach dogs safely and what to do if you are approached by an aggressive dog.
In particular, children should be taught how to behave around dogs, and parents must actively supervise.
Tips for dog owners
- Your yard must be adequate for dog/s to be effectively confined in or at the premises. Ensure your gates are secured, and fencing is adequate for the dog breed.
- Whilst walking in public places, effectively control your dog.
