The Shire of Harvey is helping WA take a breath of fresh air with a donation to the tree-planting and carbon-offset charity Carbon Positive Australia.

The Shire of Harvey is helping WA take a breath of fresh air with a donation to the tree-planting and carbon-offset charity Carbon Positive Australia.

The funds are from the Shire’s Tip Shop Tree Planting Program, which operates from the Richardson Road Waste Management Facility in Uduc.

Through the program, community members give pre-loved items to the Tip Shop, where they are later sold to be re-used or re-purposed.

In 2023, Council agreed to donate Tip Shop proceeds, recovered scrap metal sales and refunds from recovered containers to land rehabilitation efforts across WA.

Shire President Michelle Campbell said over the last year, the program generated $13,624 which would now be used to revegetate 33.17 hectares of land - roughly the size of three Harvey Recreation Grounds.

“Carbon Positive Australia expects our support to capture about 442 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent,” the Shire President said.

“This is an amazing result made possible thanks to the hard work of our waste management team and the Harvey Region community members who donate and purchase from the Tip Shop. It’s been great to get down to earth on this project - and it certainly looks like we’ve been barking up the right tree.”

Carbon Positive Australia’s Head of Communications, Engagement, and Marketing Lauren Purcell said her team were thrilled to continue their partnership with the Shire of Harvey.

“The Shire of Harvey’s support over the past three years has been instrumental in amplifying what it truly means to be carbon positive,” she said.

“At Carbon Positive Australia, we often say that restoring Australia’s biodiversity is as simple as trees, but this vital work is only possible with the backing of forward-thinking organisations like the Shire of Harvey. Through this partnership, the Shire is directly contributing to and witnessing tangible results in key areas of restoration”

Aside from contributing to revegetation efforts across the State, the Tip Shop has advanced the Shire’s own sustainability goals by diverting more waste from landfill and encouraging upcycling in the Harvey Region.

Visit the Tip Shop at the Richardson Road Waste Management Facility off Forestry Road in Uduc any day of the week between 8am and 4.30pm.
