Parking Laws

The Shire's rangers monitor parking including safety around our schools to ensure the safe flow of traffic.

School Parking

Parking around schools can become a serious safety risk - especially when drivers park illegally or speed through school zones. These actions put children and other pedestrians in danger.

To help keep everyone safe, please take a moment to review the key parking rules below. They highlight the most common issues and how you can avoid them.

Stopping at or near a bus stop

Drivers are not allowed to stop their vehicles within:

  • 20 metres before a bus stop, or
  • 10 metres after a bus stop,

unless:

  • The vehicle is a public bus picking up or dropping off passengers, or
  • There is a parking sign that allows stopping, and the driver is following those rules.
No Stopping, No Parking signs, and Yellow Lines

No Stopping:

You must not stop your vehicle in any area where a "No Stopping" sign is displayed.

No Parking:

You can’t park in an area with a "No Parking" sign unless:

  • You’re only picking up or dropping off passengers or goods,
  • You do not leave the vehicle unattended;
  • You leave within 2 minutes.

Yellow Edge Lines:

You must not stop next to a solid yellow line painted along the edge of the road.

Stopping on Verge – Includes Caravan and Trailer Parking

You must not stop a vehicle on a verge (the strip between the road and a property) if:

  • It's any vehicle other than a bicycle,
  • It's a commercial vehicle, bus, trailer, or caravan that’s not attached to a car,
  • Or, there’s a sign nearby that says no stopping on the verge.

Exception:

You can stop on the verge if:

  • You’re the owner or occupier of the property next to the verge, or
  • You have permission from them to stop there.

For commercial vehicles:

You can stop on the verge only while loading or unloading, if:

  • You're doing it quickly and efficiently,
  • It’s for the property next to that verge, and
  • You’re not blocking the road or footpath for others.
Stopping in a Loading Zone

You can only stop in a loading zone if:

  • You’re using a commercial or trade vehicle to pick up or drop off goods, or
  • You’re dropping off or picking up passengers.

But even then:

  • Don’t stay longer than the time shown on the sign, or
  • If no time is listed, don’t stay longer than 30 minutes.
Parking on Reserves

You must not drive or park on any reserve (like parks or public open spaces) unless:

  • You’re a local government employee doing your job, or
  • You’ve been given permission by the local government,
  • And you park in an area that’s clearly marked for parking.
ACROD (Disability) Parking

A vehicle parked in an ACROD bay must:

  • Clearly display a valid disability parking permit, showing the expiry date and permit number from the front of the car.
  • Only the person the permit is issued to can use it.

No one else is allowed to display or pretend to display a disability permit unless it’s their own and valid.

General Parking General Parking

Some key things to remember about where not to park:

  • Not in the middle of the road, between other parked cars and the road center.
  • Not on or near median strips.
  • Don’t block driveways, laneways, or access points.
  • Avoid parking next to roadworks, scaffolding, or obstacles that might block traffic.
  • Stay 10 metres away from traffic islands.
  • No parking on footpaths or pedestrian crossings.
  • Don’t park between the road edge and double continuous white/yellow lines, unless there’s at least 3 metres of space.
  • Don’t park in intersections, unless it’s alongside a continuous curb without a side street.

Stay at least:

  • 1 metre away from fire hydrants or fire hydrant signs,
  • 3 metres away from public letterboxes (unless you're collecting mail), and
  • 10 metres away from where side streets meet the street you’re parking on—unless signs or markings say it’s okay.
