The Shire of Harvey and Alcoa have removed hurdles in the local equestrian scene with a $15,000 grant to the South West Horse Trials Club.

The Shire of Harvey and Alcoa have removed hurdles in the local equestrian scene with a $15,000 grant to the South West Horse Trials Club.

The funding, which has been matched by the Club, will be used to purchase show jumping equipment for training days and competitions.

Club President Melissa Jenkins said support from the Shire and Alcoa was a welcome relief for the Club, which has had limited access to essential equipment for decades.

“For roughly 45 years, we have hired and transported show jumping sets from other clubs,” she said.

"This has been costly and limited the events we can organise in the Harvey Region.

“This grant will provide local riders access to fantastic show jumping equipment, strengthen use of an important sporting facility and give us greater flexibility in creating a strong equestrian events calendar.”

The Club’s new grant was awarded through the Alcoa Harvey Sustainability Fund, which is a helping hand offered every year through the Shire of Harvey’s Community Grants Program.

Alcoa Community Relations Manager Tom Busher said the Fund was a key way Alcoa and the Shire supported positive long-term outcomes for the community.

“We want to see a successful and thriving sport and recreation scene and well-resourced clubs are vital to achieving that.

“We are delighted to support the South West Horse Trials Club with this grant and look forward to seeing even more people horse around in the Harvey Region.”

Shire of Harvey President Michelle Campbell agreed.

“Our partnership with Alcoa has been a springboard for multiple projects that increase the economic, social, environmental or recreational fabric of the Harvey Region,” she said.

“Building local capacity is a priority for the Shire. It means clubs increasingly have access to the equipment and facilities they need, so they no longer have to borrow from or plan around other communities.

“So, here’s a tip straight from the horses mouth - the Shire’s 2025 Community Grants round is open until Friday, 4 April 2025.

If you have a great plan that will boost vibrancy, connectedness or sustainability in the Harvey Region, book an appointment with the Shire’s Grants Officer today.”
