The Shire of Harvey is a step closer to transforming the Harvey Library into a modern community hub after securing a $6.1 million Growing Regions Round 2 – Grant.
The Australian Government funding will pair with the Shire’s $9.4 million commitment to this project, which will include expanding the building, restoring the façade, and developing multi-use spaces.
The new building will also feature a tourist trail stop that invites visitors to explore the library’s newest offerings, including historical society exhibits and an interpretive display celebrating beloved local children’s author May Gibbs.
Shire President Michelle Campbell said the community was thrilled to see the Australian Government support this project.
“The Harvey Library has been a beloved institution in our Shire since it first opened in 1922,” the Shire President said.
“Libraries have transformed into very diverse places since then – at our Library we read, teach, learn, meet, connect, draw, paint, and the list goes on. All with limited space.
“With this new funding, we will create the Harvey Multi-Use Learning and Community Hub. This community endorsed project is designed to meet the needs of Library user groups and our growing population.
“We’re thrilled the Australian Government has backed this plan through their Growing Regions Grant Program.
“I would like to formally acknowledge the funding from the Australian Government and thank our local community advocate Karen Linstrom and the countless other people that have supported this project, as well as our amazing Library staff.
“We can’t wait to write the Harvey Library’s next chapter!”
In addition to the expanded building and new exhibits, the highly anticipated project will improve accessibility and pedestrian connectivity at the Harvey Library.
Locals can also expect a new home for Harvey Community Radio Station, surrounded by contemporary amenities and a fresh garden.
