The Shire and Harvey Aboriginal Corporation have been invited to present the Harvey Aboriginal Hiking Leadership Program at WA Trails and Recreation Forum in Albany from 13-15 October 2021.
The presentation will give an overview of the Aboriginal Hiking Leaders Program as part of a stream exploring aboriginal connection to country, tourism, leadership and partnerships within the sector.
The pilot hiking program will be running across entry level tracks throughout the Shire, inviting community members to participate and learn about the cultural significance of the Shire’s natural landmarks.
Shire of Harvey President Paul Gillett said the program plays a significant role in developing local tourism and supporting the reconciliation journey.
“This program creates tourism and employment opportunities. It is great to have future Aboriginal leaders involved in this project, sharing their culture with the broader community,” Cr Gillett said.
The development of the program is funded by Department of Local Government Sport and Culture, Shire of Harvey and Alcoa.
Developing cultural eco-tours within national parks is an activity closely supported by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attraction’s Culture in the Park Program.
