The Leschenault Leisure Centre is the premier sporting and aquatic centre in the Shire of Harvey and a leading South West sporting facility.
Shire of Harvey President Paul Gillett said this project was a key priority to ensure that we provide sporting facilities that meet the needs of our growing population.
"Upgrades to the Leschenault Leisure Centre are critical as we are already at capacity and we need to ensure we are meeting the current and future needs for the region.
"We need to provide the infrastructure to encourage physical activity to support a healthy lifestyle by harnessing the social benefits of sport, through improved cohesion and reduced isolation.”
Cr Gillett said these upgrades would allow the centre to expand its programs and attract state and regional competitions.
He said it would triple their seating capacity and provide fit-for-purpose facilities for wheel chair basketball and increase the number of sporting clubs who can play at the centre.
"These upgrades would support not only the Shire's needs but the greater South West region would benefit.
"For the first time ever we would be able to attract state and regional competitions, as the upgrades include full size courts which are compliant for basketball and netball."
The upgrades include two to four additional courts, a show court with enhanced sport technology, grandstand and spectator seating and a mezzanine level for additional viewing that can also be used as an event space. In addition, there will be accessible and appropriate changing facilities, storage, accommodation for game day administration, umpires and time keeping, and amenities for training and education opportunities.
The Shire has completed extensive consultation, needs and feasibility studies and developed concept plans and is currently working closely with users of the facility to refine the design.
Further community consultation opportunities will be made available in the new year and communicated on the Shire’s website. It is anticipated that the final design will be presented to Council by June 2022.
The project will cater for the local and regional sport and recreation industry through an estimated $15 million redevelopment.
A financial commitment of $3 million from the State Government was secured in March 2021 with an additional $6 million committed by Council. The Shire is seeking additional funding support from Federal Government, and other partnership opportunities continue to be investigated.
