Albemarle Workers' Accommodation Proposal

Albemarle Workers' Accommodation Proposal
16 Aug 2022

A $73 million workers' accommodation proposal for Albemarle will be advertised after the Joint Development Assessment Panel determined it a Residential Building.

Shire of Harvey Council determined that a proposal for a $73 million workers’ accommodation project at Binningup was not consistent with the zoning and therefore wasn’t permitted.

The plan proposes to accommodate 500 workers for the expansion of the nearby Albemarle Lithium Plant in Kemerton using 24.74ha of the site to build 128 accommodation villas, including a commercial kitchen, dining hall, recreation centre, pool and seven laundries.

Council refused the application at its July Ordinary Council Meeting, however, the Joint Development Assessment Panel (JDAP) is the determining authority for the application.

At a meeting held on 15 August the Joint Development Assessment Panel (JDAP) determined that the proposal is not Workforce Accommodation but instead is a Residential Building that is a discretionary use within the General Farming zone.

JDAP requested that the application be advertised as a Residential Building for a period of 45 days.

The Shire was requested to provide a new Responsible Authority Report within 60 days to JDAP.

Have your say on the proposal.
